Goal
The goal of this guide is to provide a clear and efficient path to completing a Living Pokédex in any of the Gen 1 games. It is meant to be used as a template, not a rigid step-by-step walkthrough. You are highly encouraged to adapt it to your own playstyle, make up for lucky or unlucky encounters, and build a team you love. The Pokémon info page is always there to help you make those informed decisions.
Here are a few key points about how this guide works:
- The Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue versions assume you only play these two games. The Pokémon Yellow version assumes you play all three Gen 1 games.
- The checklist is directly linked to the Pokédex Tracker. Marking a Pokémon as caught here will automatically update the tracker, and vice-versa. If you have both pages open at the same time, remember to refresh one after updating the other.
- For more detailed explanations of catching mechanics, item locations, or the Mew glitch, you can check out the Extra info page.
Recommendations and Tips
For a fun and smooth experience, here are a few recommendations:
- Within each area of the guide, Pokémon are listed by floor then rarity. It is most efficient to search for the rarest Pokémon first, as you will likely encounter the more common ones in the process.
- The toughest Pokémon to obtain in Gen 1 is Dragonite as it evolves at Level 55 and has a slow experience curve. Try to get a Dratini early, and trade it to benefit from the Traded bonus experience.
- Be sure to visit Professor Oak's Aide on Route 15 after catching 50 different Pokémon to receive the Exp. All.
- All elemental evolution stones can be purchased infinitely at the Celadon Department Store for 2100 Pokédollars.
- Enjoy yourself and have fun!
